The first quiz will be held prior to class on Thursday October 10th. It will consist of 20 multiple-choice questions on material covered to that point in class. You are to complete the quiz on Canvas.

Since this is being administered on Canvas, you can complete the quiz basically from anywhere. You will be permitted up to 25 minutes in which to complete the 20 questions on the quiz. The window of opportunity to complete the quiz will run from 11am on Wednesday 9 Oct until 11 am on October 10. I will arrange for you to receive the answer key to the quiz five minutes after its close. That way you will have the appropriate feedback to let you know where you are on track and where you aren’t.

Class time on October 10th will be devoted to preparing the first short paper for the course. Students will forms groups of two or three students to plan an approach to the paper. The instructor will circulate in class to offer advice and answer questions. In the latter portion of Thursday’s class, each group of students will designate one of their number to share how their group intends to approach the paper.

Papers are due at the beginning of class on Tuesday, October 15th.

As to the pedagogy of this approach, the quiz will focus upon major concepts we have discussed regarding each of the psychologists covered to date. As such, the quiz will serve as something of a review of the material covered. A study sheet is provided here and through a link on the evaluation page. The small group discussions are aimed at facilitating further reflection and insight into the implications of what we have studied.

This first paper is to be short, no longer than 3 pages, double spaced with conventional margins, equalling no more than 750 words. Papers may be individual or collective efforts by two or (at most) three students. Make certain each student who contributes to the paper is listed as an author. Co-authors will all receive the same grade.

The topic of the paper is to defend one of the three approaches we have covered up to that point in the course (psychoanalytic, behavioral or humanist) as an effective guide for analyzing contemporary populism in either the US or UK. The paper is to be a thought piece, not a research paper. So additional sources beyond those listed on the course outline are unnecessary. Nevertheless, the additional readings for psychoanalytic, behavioural or humanist approach available on the course website may be useful. Formal footnotes and references are not required, other than to permit finding any direct quotations from or references to the required or additional readings.

Please note that simple description of both the psychological approach and populism should be kept to the absolute minimum. Instead, your focus should be on analysis and synthesis. So your paper should focus on identifying the essential aspects of your psychological approach and how it sheds specific light on the politics of contemporary US or UK populism. Papers should provide strong evidence of a nuanced understanding of the aspects of the psychological approach selected (analysis) and its specific detailed application in understanding contemporary populism (synthesis).

An excellent paper must, of course, be well written and organized with clear indications of originality.
